['brædwədiːn], Thomas, englischer Mathematiker, Philosoph und Theologe, * Hartfield (County Sussex) um 1290, ✝ Lambeth (heute zu London) 26. 8. 1349; lehrte 1325-35 am Merton-College (Oxford); 1337-49 Domherr von Saint Paul's Cathedral in London (seit 1339 auch Hofprediger Eduards III.), 1349 Erzbischof von Canterbury. Als Mathematiker wurde Bradwardine bekannt durch seine elementarmathematischen Darstellungen »Geometria speculativa« (herausgegeben 1495, mit Untersuchungen über sternförmige Vielecke) und »Arithmetica speculativa« (herausgegeben 1495). Seine bedeutendste Leistung, mit der die kinematischen Untersuchungen der Oxforder »Merton-Schule« beginnen, ist die im »Tractatus de proportionibus velocitatum motuum« (1328, herausgegeben 1495) vorgeschlagene Verbesserung des aristotelischen Bewegungsgesetzes (Geschwindigkeit proportional der bewegenden Kraft und umgekehrt proportional dem Widerstand). Weitere Arbeiten Bradwardines betreffen die Kontinuumstheorie (Auseinandersetzung mit atomistischen Theorien) im »Tractatus de continuo« (nach 1328, herausgegeben 1936/37) und Prädestinationsfragen (»De futuris contingentibus«, herausgegeben in Auszügen 1935; »De causa Dei. ..«, 3 Bände, um 1344, herausgegeben 1618, Nachdruck 1964). Bradwardines strenge, beinahe deterministische Prädestinationslehre wirkte möglicherweise auf J. Wycliffe.
